Good afternoon CVE, this is just an alert that the power is out at school. We will not be releasing students early today, however, due to the loss of power, our phone lines are currently down. We will update further with any changes. Thank you for your patience.

Dear CVE Families, While the signal of springtime weather often means new growth and life for us to enjoy, sometimes tragedy still befalls us. As news travels fast in our small community, you may already be aware of a recent adult loss of life that happened unexpectedly and tragically this week. I am reaching out regarding this matter because this event directly affects some of our very own and beloved Coyote Valley Elementary coyotes, and I feel that it is important to address how we, as a school, will support our students through this challenging time. First and foremost, at CVE we want to honor and respect the privacy of the family who is currently mourning the loss of their loved ones. This is a very vulnerable time for the bereaved and we wish only to support them in whatever way they need. We will not be discussing any of the details regarding those whose lives have been lost; that is not our place or our right. However, when there is a sudden, tragic, and unexpected loss of life, children often react in many different ways. This event may trigger memories of previous trauma or loss of life, and that child may need a space and time to process this. For others, this event may be entirely new and unfamiliar, and therefore questions may arise in an attempt to gain an understanding of the unfathomable. Some children may simply be worried about how this event is going to affect their classmate, and they wish only to explore ways to comfort their friend in their time of need. As such, we will be responding to each child individually (on a case by case basis) who is either expressing or showing that they need some support and guidance as a result of this event. The support that your child will receive–with your consent–will be delivered sensitively and in a developmentally appropriate manner. At Coyote Valley Elementary, we also acknowledge and respect that some families prefer to have discussions of this nature at home, privately, and just among family. If you would like assistance, we can send home information that can help guide and facilitate discussions about death, dying, loss, and grief, as well as information that may better help you to understand the grief process for your child at their particular developmental stage. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you think this information would be helpful. Once again, I would like to emphasize that we are going to do absolutely everything we can to respect the privacy of the bereaved at this time, as well as provide support to anyone who may need it. Thank you for your sensitive consideration in this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Sincerely, Matt Coit Principal Coyote Valley Elementary School
